Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. a Bachelor degree obtained with Second Class (Honours) or better in the same area or in a closely related area of study as the area of study applied for, or
  2. a Bachelor degree in the same area or in a closely related area of study as that applied for, with an average mark of not less than 65% in that area of study, or similar qualifications deemed by the Board relevant to that chosen for the Course, or
  3. a degree from this or another university, which the Board considers as comparable to any of the degrees indicated in paragraphs (a) and (b).

The Board may also consider applicants in possession of degrees or qualifications other than those referred to in (a) to (c) if they also present a portfolio of work confirmed to have been carried out by them and which is related to the area of study applied for to the satisfaction of the Board.

Applicants applying in terms of (b), (c) and those referred to in the previous paragraph may be required to follow a preparatory programme.

Applicants shall indicate the provisional title for the dissertation on their application for admission. The application shall include a research proposal as well as a statement by the head of department concerned that applicants possess the training, knowledge and capabilities required for the proposed line of study and research.

The Master of Arts in Marketing Communication (by research) is a newly designed research programme that is designed to equip aspiring scholars with the necessary skills to excel in the field of marketing communication. As the global marketplace continues to evolve, this programme emphasises the integration of marketing analytics with a multidimensional approach to marketing and communication. This postgraduate course will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in various roles in marketing communication, including advertising, branding, digital marketing, sales promotion and market research. By providing rigorous academic training and hands-on research experience, the aim of this programme is to empower you to pursue an academic path that can lead to several exciting career opportunities in the ever-expanding field of marketing communication.

In addition to the research component, students are required to register for 10 ECTS credits in taught study-units as directed by the Board.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in semester 2 of academic year 2023-24 and continue up to the end of semester 2 of academic year 2024-25.
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Arts - M.A.- under the auspices of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Apply marketing communication theories after gaining a comprehensive understanding of various marketing communication theories, models, and frameworks.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in research methodology, including data collection, analysis and interpretation.
  • Integrate critical thinking and analytical skills by critically evaluating marketing communication problems, generating hypotheses, and analysing data to make informed decisions.
  • Practice effective communication skills by communication effectively with diverse audiences, including presenting research findings, crafting marketing messages and building stakeholder relationships.
  • Apply strategic marketing skills that align with organisational goals, thus enhancing the brand's reputation and creative value for customers.
